WhatsApp coexistence: use the Business app and the API on the same number
You can keep your WhatsApp Business app and still add automation, bots and a team inbox on the same number. Here is how coexistence works and what to check first.

The short answer
Coexistence lets you connect the number you already use in the WhatsApp Business app to the WhatsApp Business API, so the number works in both at once. Your team can keep chatting from the phone while software handles the shared inbox, automation and broadcasts.
It is a good fit for a business that does not want to change its number or retrain its staff. It has trade-offs, and they are worth knowing before you connect.
What it is
Meta describes coexistence as connecting an existing WhatsApp Business app account and its phone number to the Cloud API through a sign-up flow run by a partner. Afterwards the business can still message one-to-one from the app, and WhatsApp keeps the message history in sync between the app and the API.
Your account keeps its identity. Meta turns it into a messaging account but does not create a new one.
Why businesses choose it
You keep your number. Customers have it saved, and it may be printed on boards and cards.
Your staff can carry on replying from the phone they already know.
Software can take over the repetitive work: a shared team inbox, bots and AI replies, scheduled broadcasts and CRM follow-ups.
Meta also says messages sent from the WhatsApp Business app stay free, while messages sent through the API follow API pricing.
What you give up
Meta lists some app features that are switched off or not supported once a number is connected. Broadcast lists stop working: existing lists become read-only and you cannot create new ones. Group chats are not supported. Disappearing messages, view-once and live location are turned off in one-to-one chats.
If your team depends on broadcast lists or groups from the app, plan to move that work to the API and your platform before you connect.
Rules to know before connecting
The phone must run a recent version of the WhatsApp Business app (Meta names 2.24.17 or newer).
History is copied once, during the connection. Meta says it covers up to 180 days of one-to-one chats, and the copy must happen within 24 hours of connecting, so do not leave the connection half finished.
A number used on both has a fixed sending speed of 20 messages a second, which is plenty for most small and medium businesses.
Only up to four linked devices work, and connecting unlinks existing ones, so link them again afterwards.
Keep using the phone. If the app on the main phone is not opened for roughly two weeks, the connection can drop.
To disconnect, do it from the app under Settings, Account, Business Platform, Disconnect Account.
How the 24-hour window works
On the API, replying freely is allowed for 24 hours after the customer last wrote. For a connected number, that window opens when a customer writes to you after the connection. Messages you send from the app are not limited by that window.
If a customer wrote to you before you connected, the API can reply to them only with an approved template until they write again.
Bots and people on the same number
The risk with two ways to reply is a bot and a person answering at once. In Karyagrah, when a team member replies, including from the WhatsApp Business app on a coexistence number, the bot goes quiet for a time you choose in Settings, then picks the chat up again if the customer writes later. That keeps customers from getting two answers.
Is it right for you?
Coexistence suits a small team with an existing number and chat history that wants automation without changing numbers.
It is less suitable if your day depends on broadcast lists and groups in the app, if you expect very high sending speed, or if several people need to work on the same chats at once. For those cases a number moved fully to the API is usually better.
If you are not sure which setup you have, check your connected number in Karyagrah or ask us.

Frequently asked questions
Does coexistence cost extra?
Messages sent from the WhatsApp Business app stay free. Messages sent through the API follow normal API pricing. Karyagrah's plan fee is separate.
Can I still use the WhatsApp Business app on my phone?
Yes. That is the point of coexistence. You can keep replying one-to-one from the app while the API handles the rest.
What happens to my broadcast lists?
Meta says broadcast lists are disabled after connection. Existing lists become read-only and you cannot create new ones. Use API broadcasts instead.
Will my old chats come across?
If you agree to share history during the connection, Meta copies up to 180 days of one-to-one chats. It happens once, so choose carefully.
Can I go back to using only the app?
Yes. Disconnect from the app under Settings, Account, Business Platform, Disconnect Account. Do this deliberately, because it also ends the API side.
